GEAUGA COUNTY, Ohio — Crews were at the scene of a fire at Interstate Towing & Transport near the border of Chardon and Hambden Township in Geauga County on Tuesday.
No injuries were reported.
When the first reports about the fire were initially released at around 11:20 a.m., officials described the scene as a "large fire with explosions."
However, Hambden Township Assistant Fire Chief Dave Peterson told 3News that there was no evidence that any explosions took place.
"It's likely the 'explosions' heard were tires from the vehicles popping," Peterson added.
Two Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) boxes were activated, leading to assistance from 18 fire departments from surrounding areas.
The fire, which involved multiple vehicles stored in the building, was brought under control at 12:26 pm. 3News' Danielle Wiggins arrived at the scene at approximately 1 p.m. and could still smell smoke in the air.
While crews worked to contain the fire, the Geauga County Sheriff's Office announced that U.S. Route 6 was closed near Grant Street. Motorists were being asked to avoid the area.
By 1:53 p.m., U.S. Route 6 was reopened.
The State Fire Marshals' Office and the Geauga County Fire Investigation Unit will be handling the investigation.
