PAINESVILLE, Ohio — Crews are investigating a deadly Painesville fire that claimed the life of a man overnight at a two-story apartment home in the 500 block of Mentor Avenue. Firefighters first responded to the scene around 2:30 a.m.
"Fire crews quickly worked to search the building, but were severely hampered by hoarding conditions and a partial roof collapse," Painesville fire officials said in a press release. "Crews continued to fight the fire, which was brought under control around 4 a.m."
The victim was found in one of the apartments, but authorities have not released his name.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials had closed Mentor Avenue early Tuesday morning between Grant and Washington streets as firefighters worked at the scene.
