WILLOUGHBY, Ohio — Fernando Alejo, the 23-year-old Painesville resident accused of murdering 17-year-old Rogelio Cabrera, appeared in court on Tuesday morning.
During an arraignment hearing at the Willoughby Municipal Court, he was not given a bond.
Alejo was charged with murder in connection with a deadly Willoughby shooting that happened over the weekend.
The incident dates back to Saturday, July 13, when officers were called to the alleyway adjacent to a restaurant at 4066 Erie Street at around 12:30 a.m. for a reported shooting.
A witness told police they heard a gunshot from across the street and saw a victim lying on the ground, with a man allegedly running west away from the scene.
Willougby police found Cabrera, the 17-year-old from Madison, near the back of the alley. Officers and paramedics rendered first aid but the teen was determined to have died at the scene.
At around 10 a.m. on Saturday, Alejo was arrested after officers tracked down the suspect's car driving on I-90 and I-80 in Indiana.
Willoughby police say Alejo will be held at the Lake County Jail until his next court appearance on July 18.
