ELYRIA, Ohio — For the third time since last week, a bomb threat caused an evacuation on the campus of Lorain County Community College (LCCC). As a result, LCCC has made the decision to shift to remote learning for the remainder of this week.
"As the investigation into the unsubstantiated bomb threats continues, classes and services will be remote for the remainder of this week," LCCC put out on its social media platforms on Tuesday afternoon.
The latest threat occurred earlier in the day on Tuesday.
“Bomb Threat on Campus - Evacuate Immediately,” according to a tweet sent out by Lorain County Community College at 9:17 a.m. Tuesday. “Our campus has received another non-specific bomb threat. Please evacuate the campus immediately. Law enforcement is on campus.”
After evacuating students, staff, and faculty, the Elyria Police Department conducted a sweep of the campus buildings looking for any suspicious devices. None were found.
By Tuesday afternoon, LCCC announced that all of its campuses would remain closed for the day with all classes cancelled. Prior to the post about the shift to remote learning, the college had stated that the campus would reopen on Wednesday with classes scheduled to resume.
3News has learned Tuesday's bomb threat came in electronically. "We are taking these threats seriously and have involved the federal authorities," Elyria Police Chief Bill Pelko said in a statement. "We are currently working with these federal authorities to see if there is a connection with the other threats."
Lorain County Community College initiated two separate evacuation orders last week for different bomb threats that were reported Thursday and Friday.
“We’re seeing the impact that these threats are having on the main campus and local safety resources. We’ll continue to investigate the threats and seek to identify those responsible so that we can hold them accountable. We’re working closely with school administrators on this matter,” Elyria Police Lieutenant Bill Lantz said in a statement last week.
Police previously said an investigation was underway regarding the allegation of making terroristic threats, which would be a third-degree felony.
