12-year-old boy 'accidentally shot' in Holmes County after rifle falls off ATV

As of Wednesday morning, the victim's condition is unknown.

HOLMES COUNTY, Ohio — The Holmes County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a 12-year-old boy was injured as a result of an "accidental shooting" when a rifle fell off an ATV.

According to a post on Facebook, the sheriff's department says that deputies responded to the shooting in Clark Township near Township Road 154 at around 4:43 pm. on Tuesday.

An initial investigation reveals that a Stone Creek boy was "accidentally shot" while transporting a single-shot rifle on a 4-wheeler. While driving the ATV in a farm field, the rifle fell off, hitting the ground and discharging. 

The victim was taken to a nearby landing zone by East Holmes EMS and then was transported to Akron Children's Hospital by a Metro Life Flight helicopter.

Officials say that the victim's condition is unknown as of Wednesday morning. 

The Holmes County Sheriff's Office was assisted on scene by East Holmes fire and EMS. 

At this time the shooting remains under investigation.
