NEWBURGH HEIGHTS, Ohio — Two Newburgh Heights Police officers were taken to the hospital early Friday morning after an altercation with a suspect who allegedly charged at them and started a physical fight.
According to police, the incident began shortly after 3 a.m. when the Newburgh Heights Police Department was called to assist the Cuyahoga Heights Police Department with reports of a pedestrian walking on I-77 near Harvard and Grant Avenues.
Upon the arrival of the first Newburgh Heights officer, the suspect, whose identity has not been made public at this time, allegedly charged at the officer and began a physical altercation. A second officer arrived shortly after and deployed his taser on the violent suspect. The second officer then assisted and the two were able to successfully subdue the suspect.
The suspect and the two officers were then transported to Marymount Hospital for treatment. The first officer sustained several injuries while the second officer sustained a possible broken hand. Both officers have since been discharged. It's unclear whether or not the suspect is still being treated for his injuries.
Newburgh Heights officials tell 3News that the suspect is facing charges of assault on a peace officer.
No other information is available at this time.
The matter remains under investigation by the Newburgh Heights Police Department.
