CLEVELAND — Ohio native Hunter Armstrong is already a gold medalist at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, but he's no longer the mix to earn another one in the men's 100m backstroke.
After propelling Team USA to a thrilling victory in the 4x100m freestyle relay on Saturday, Armstrong finished fifth in his 100m backstroke heat Sunday with a time of 53.34 seconds. Hours later in the semifinal, Armstrong fell short in the semifinal with an 11th overall time of 53.11 seconds.
Armstrong wasn't alone in representing Northeast Ohio in the event. Akron native Jonny Marshall, who is competing for Great Britain, was the 16th and final swimmer to qualify for the semifinals with a time of 53.93. He improved his time in the semifinal with 53.46, but it was not enough to advance as Marshall ended his run in 14th overall.
The swimmers were not the only Ohio natives going for gold in Paris on Sunday; fencer and Cleveland native Lee Kiefer made history by earning a spot in the first All-American gold medal duel in the women's individual foil event.
