WINDHAM, Ohio — One person is dead following a shooting incident involving a sheriff's deputy Saturday morning in Portage County.
According to County Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski, the deputy and a Garrettsville police officer were called to the 8000 block of Werger Road in Windham Township around 9:30 a.m. following a report of a "dispute" between neighbors. While on the way there, both were informed one of the people at the scene was apparently armed with a gun.
Not long after the deputy and officer arrived and began investigating, Zuchowski says "shots were fired" and that one of the subjects was hit and taken to University Hospitals Portage Medical Center, where they later died from their injuries. At this time, specific information regarding who was killed, who fired the fatal shot, or who may have fired first is not known.
"Details will remain vague due to an ongoing investigation and until all family members are notified," Zuchowski said in a statement. "An update will be communicated when available."
Zuchowski did note that neither the deputy not the officer were injured in the incident. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is currently looking into the matter.
