CLEVELAND — 2022 has been filled with ups and downs for Northeast Ohio and the nation. 3News' very own Russ Mitchell takes you through what happened this year at home and abroad.

COVID-19 pandemic continues and inflation rises
As many returned to normal for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals continued to deal with surges of the virus, shortages and inflation. Inflation reached the highest level in nearly 40 years in 2022.
Justin Bibb sworn in as Mayor of Cleveland
In 2022, the City of Cleveland saw a new administration as Mayor Justin M. Bibb was sworn into office, becoming the city's 58th mayor.
Cleveland hosts 2022 NBA All-Star Game
Cleveland took the national stage as they played host to the 2022 NBA All-Star Game. The event gave local business owners a prime opportunity for revenue and tourism as thousands came to Cleveland for the weekend.
The special weekend also marked a homecoming for LeBron James as he hit the game-winning shot lifting his team to a 163-160 victory over Team Durant.
Chardon High School shooting: 10 years later
February marked the 10-year anniversary of the tragic shooting at Chardon High School that took the lives of three students.
Russia invades Ukraine
On Feb. 24 Russia sent troops into Ukraine for the beginning of an invasion. 3News sat down with Northeast Ohioans from Ukraine who have expressed their concern during these troubling times.
Cleveland Guardians change name, finish historic season
In their first year as the Cleveland Guardians, the young baseball team left a memorable mark on Cleveland. With the youngest roster in the MLB, the Guardians made it to Game 5 of the American League Division Series against the New York Yankees.
Controversial Deshaun Watson trade
After the Cleveland Browns made the decision to trade for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, it quickly became a controversial topic in Cleveland. Watson, who served an 11-game suspension took the field for the Browns in December for the first time.
Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade
On June 24, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in a historic decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization case. The decision ended nearly 50 years of federally guaranteed access to abortion. In Ohio, many took to the streets to express their feelings about the decision.
Jayland Walker police shooting in Akron
On June 27, unarmed Jayland Walker of Akron was struck and killed after shots were fired by eight police officers following a police chase. 3News Investigates uncovered that 90-plus shots were fired during the confrontation with Walker.
Akron residents took to the streets calling for unity and justice after Walker's death.
Donovan Mitchell joins Cleveland Cavaliers
After a breakthrough season, the Cleveland Cavaliers acquired All-Star Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz. Mitchell has already made his mark on Cleveland, averaging 28.4 points per game. He has helped guide the team to amass a 22-14 record so far in the 2022-23 season.
Retirement of St. Ignatius Head Football Coach Chuck Kyle
At the end of the 2022 season, long-time St. Ignatius Head Football Coach Chuck Kyle retired. The historic high school football coach ended his career with a loss to St. Edward in the regional semifinals. 3News' Jim Donovan sat down with Coach Kyle to reflect on my memorable career.
NASA's Artemis I mission
After months of delays, NASA finally launched Artemis I, which marked the first in a series of missions set to return humans to the moon. 3News' Besty Kling provided in-depth coverage prior to the first attempted launch.
Glenville High School wins state championship
