CLEVELAND — It was a thriller, but a heartbreaker for the Cleveland Browns on Monday night that very nearly turned into Tuesday morning.
Justin Tucker hit a 55-yard field goal into the Dawg Pound side of FirstEnergy Stadium with two seconds left in regulation to propel the Baltimore Ravens to a 47-42 win over the Browns. The Ravens added a safety on the final play to complete the scoring.
Those Ravens are right back in the thick of it in the AFC playoffs at 8-5. They've won two in a row and look like they're back on track after losing four of their last five games. Baltmore has a very favorable schedule the rest of the way.
For the Browns, this is a stumble, but they have to get right back up and do it quickly as they'll play at the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football this weekend. The Browns will follow that up with the other team from the Big Apple, the New York Jets, the following week.
If the Browns go to New York these next two weeks and take care of business, the path to the playoffs looks good. They would have 11 wins and that should get them in. The Browns are 9-4 now.
But this one got away from them after a heroic comeback led by Baker Mayfield, who threw an interception, but also had a pair of touchdown passes and 343 yards passing in the game. He also ran for a score. Mayfield fought right down to the finish against Lamar Jackson. Just think about the rivalry these two quarterbacks are going to have for years to come!
The Browns defense simply didn't have an answer for Jackson all night long. He ran around them, by them, through them for 124 yards and two touchdowns. Jackson is a very special player and so tough to defend.
On special teams, the Browns also had a tough night from their kicker Cody Parkey. He missed an extra point and a 39-yard field goal. And even on the ones he made, Parkey didn't look too confident. At this stage of the season, your kicker has to be solid. Their kicker (Tucker) was great, our kicker was wobbly.
