Picking up their first win of the season -- and first since acquiring Odell Beckham Jr. -- the Cleveland Browns beat the New York Jets 23-3 on the 50th anniversary of Monday Night Football.
For each game during the 2019 season, we'll be tracking the star wide receiver's performance -- both on and off the field -- in a weekly piece titled "OBJ Watch."
The numbers
In total, Beckham caught one fewer pass than the seven receptions he hauled in against the Tennessee Titans in Week 1.
But that didn't stop the 3-time Pro Bowl wideout from doing more with less.
Turning in his highest yardage total since Oct. 16, 2016, Beckham turned his 6 receptions vs. the Jets into 161 yards, as well as the first touchdown of his Cleveland career. That score came on a career-long 89-yard touchdown with 3:32 remaining in the third quarter, which pushed the Browns' lead to the final score of 23-3.
Fashion watch
After a week's worth of anticipation regarding his wrist-wear, Beckham didn't disappoint.
Taking the game for pregame warmups at MetLife Stadium, the 2014 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year was once again wearing a Richard Mille watch -- albeit, a different model than the $190,000 version he wore vs. the Titans last week. Instead, Beckham opted to up the ante, wearing the translucent the RM 56-02 Tourbillon Sapphire.
Originally released in 2014, only 10 pieces of the model Beckham was wearing on Monday night are believed to exist. It also originally retailed at $2 million.
Although Beckham ditched the watch by the start of the game, his fashion drama didn't stop there. After making his aforementioned one-handed catch, Beckham was removed from the remainder of the Browns' opening drive after officials determined his rainbow-colored visor was against league rules.
Beckham returned to the game wearing a clear visor, but made it stated afterward that he felt as though the rule was only being selectively enforced.
“It’s just frustrating,” Beckham Jr. said. “I feel like I’ve grown a lot. I’ve just tried to do better and be better, and it’s like always something. It’s just always something. There’s other players in the league who have worn it all game. They threaten they’re going to take them off the field. They never do.
“It’s just always something with me, and to pull me off on third-and-goal, that just hurts the team, and that falls on me. That’s not what I want to be. That’s not what I want to do, so it’s frustrating, but all I want is for it to be equal across the league. Just keep it that way. Don’t single anybody out, but at the end of the day, it happened. Learn from it. I still don’t know what the right visor will be. That was a clear visor, but I’m not here to complain about it. I’m just happy we won.”
As for his footwear on Monday, Beckham wore a purple-and-gold version of his Nike Vapor Untouchable Pro 3 OBJ Uptempo cleats, which were inspired by the Air Jordan 5 "Fresh Prince: Friends an Family" for pregame warmups. For the start of the game, he switched into a black-and-orange colorway -- this one inspired by the Air Jordan 1 "Shattered Backboard."
Key quote
On making his return to MetLife Stadium, where he spent the first five seasons of his career as a member of the New York Giants (to ESPN):
"I've lost enough games here. So to leave this one here with a win is a good feeling."
What's next?
After beating the Jets on Monday, the Browns won't have to wait long to return to primetime. This week, Cleveland will host the defending NFC champion Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Night Football at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Through the first two weeks of the season, the Rams rank 13th in the league in passing defense, having surrendered an average of 217.2 passing yards per game.
On its unofficial depth chart, Los Angeles lists a pair of former Pro Bowl selections as starters in Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib. In wins over the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints, the Rams have yet to allow a 100-yard receiver this season.
