Boardman hit with heavy rain, flooding concerns

And are considering asking the state for funding

BOARDMAN, Ohio — It has been a soggy Labor Day weekend across Northeast Ohio, and Boardman Township in Mahoning County is one area that has experienced some flooding concerns amid heavy rain.

Video from the Boardman area on Sunday shows driveways and sidewalks transformed into rivers.

There was also a funnel cloud spotted at one point as sirens blared throughout the Boardman community. The National Weather Service announced that an EF-0 tornado touched down near the Southern Park Mall.

3News' Lydia Esparra reports the Township Administrator will ask the state of Ohio for help amid the flooding issues.

Mahoning County, meanwhile, is among a handful of locations throughout Northeast Ohio currently under a Flood Watch until 11 p.m. Monday evening.

“The Flood Watch is really in place because of the rainfall we acquired yesterday throughout the day," explains 3News meteorologist Payton Domschke. "Most of these areas have already completely saturated the ground. Some picking up way too much rain in a short period of time – and they’re expected to get more today.”

The National Weather Service says the additional rainfall could cause excessive runoff with possible flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying areas.

“Some of these thunderstorms could train over the same areas and produce locally heavy rainfall on already saturated ground,” according to the National Weather Service.
