CLEVELAND — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Cleveland has confirmed that a "brief tornado" touched down in Boardman on Sunday afternoon.
The NWS reports that the confirmation comes based on video evidence of a "visible funnel" taken from the Southern Park Mall, plus aerial drone imagery of the storm damage.
At approximately 5:44 p.m., the EF-0 tornado touched down near York Avenue, just east of California Avenue. A telephone pole was slightly bent over to the north. The tornado then hit a small strip mall building, ripping off an awning from the building along with a small portion of the roof.
The tornado then headed north, causing minor limb tree damage and blowing a small wooden fence down before quickly lifting.
The NWS say the tornado was on the ground for approximately 125 yards and lasted less than one minute. Its maximum speed was 80 miles per hour.
No injuries were reported.
In addition to the tornado, Boardman Township also experienced some flooding concerns amid heavy rain.
Mahoning County is among a handful of locations throughout Northeast Ohio currently under a Flood Watch until 11 p.m. Monday evening.
