Bay Village residents angry after multiple flooding incidents and no help from city

Residents told 3News that the city says the flooding wasn't their problem, but rather the homeowners' issue.

BAY VILLAGE, Ohio — As many Northeast Ohioans clean up the damage left by Thursday’s storm, some residents in Bay Village have had their homes flooded for the third time in three weeks.

“We were all on edge that it was going to flood,” Bay Village resident Kim Bischel said as she spoke about Thursday’s storm.

Bischel told 3News that approximately 16 homes on Canterbury Road had flooding on Thursday. However, this isn’t the first time. Bischel says this is the third time her basement has flooded in the month of July.

“I mean, it smells like crap,” said Bischel. “My floor is still wet. I cleaned up the best I can, but if we get rain again it’s going to flood again.”

It’s not just residents on Canterbury Rd. that have dealt with recent flooding in Bay Village. Residents on Bruce Road have fallen victims to flooding.

“It looked like a river bed,” said Chris Tarr. “It was so bad.”

Tarr told 3News he had just cleaned their basement after it flooded previously. He says he didn’t think it would happen again.

“I couldn’t believe it. I mean, it was coming out of the wall like a squirt gun,” said Tarr.

3News went in to multiple basements in the area and saw fans and mitigation equipment spread out.

“I’ve already had the mitigation company once, several of us have had mitigation companies two and now three times probably,” said Bischel.

Residents told 3News the mayor of Bay Village has met with those who live in the area. However, they say the city told them the flooding wasn’t their problem, it was the homeowners' problem.

“It’s 100% not from the storm dropping precipitation at a time,” said Tarr. “It’s the city's inability to deal with the water that does get dropped by the storm.”

Tarr told 3News that he plans on gathering information from other Bay Village residents that have had flooding problems and bring their issues to the state.

3News reached out to the city of Bay Village for comment, but did not hear back.
