LAKE COUNTY, Ohio — A road rage incident is under investigation in Lake County after a suspect shot at a vehicle, causing the victim to return gunfire at the suspect in self defense.
On Saturday, November 4, at approximately 11:51 a.m., Lake County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call reporting gunshots being fired near Cherry Tree Lane in Painesville Township.
When deputies arrived to the scene and spoke to the victim, the 33-year-oldl Painesville Township man said that he was shot at while traveling south on Chestnut Street in Concord Township.
He told police that he had been followed by the suspect before the suspect fired "multiple rounds" at his vehicle. The victim then tried to flee to Cherry Tree Lane before exiting his vehicle with his own gun and pointing it at the suspect's vehicle as it approached.
The victim then reported to police that he fired two shots in the direction of the suspect's vehicle in self-defense when he saw the suspect holding his firearm up as he continued to approach.
After the victim fired the self-defense shots, the suspect drove away from the scene and did not return.
Neither the victim or the suspect was struck by the gunfire.
Within hours of the incident, the Lake County Sheriff's Office Detective Bureau was able to identify the suspect based on leads they obtained after the shooting.
A search warrant was obtained for the suspect's home and vehicle.
Charges have yet to be filed against either individual, but the Sheriff's Office said in a press release that they are expected to come soon.
The incident remains under investigation.
