AVON LAKE, Ohio — A 56-year-old man sustained life-threatening injuries after crashing his motorcycle into the back of a car in Avon Lake.
According to a release from the Avon Lake Police Department, the incident happened at around 10 p.m. on Thursday evening. A Kia Forte and a Harley Davidson were both headed eastbound on Lake Road near Forest Hill Drive. Witnesses reported that the motorcycle crashed into the car from behind.
The Forte went off the road and struck a telephone pole on the north side of Lake Road. The 16-year-old female driver and her 15-year-old male passenger suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene by paramedics from the Avon Lake Fire Department.
The 56-year-old operator of the motorcycle was ejected after striking the rear of the Forte. He was taken first to University Hospitals St. John Medical Center in Westlake, then was airlifted to University Hospitals in Cleveland with what police call "life-threatening injuries."
Police say that in its initial investigation, the motorcycle was operating at a high rate of speed, which was a factor in the crash. Also, the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The accident remains under investigation.
