UNIONTOWN, Ohio — The Uniontown Fire Department reports that evacuated residents have been cleared to return home following a "large scale" natural gas leak on Thursday.
"All residents on Class are now cleared to return to their homes, the situation has been resolved," the department posted on its Facebook page at approximately 1:55 p.m.
Earlier, Uniontown fire officials reported that the gas leak was happening along Class Avenue Northwest, impacting those residents who live in the Heritage Glen and Enclave allotments.
"All homes on Class are being evacuated," department leaders wrote on Facebook.
Uniontown Fire Chief Derek Shaffer tells 3News that officials were notified after someone smelled gas in the area at around 8 a.m. He added that about 20 households were impacted by the leak and that the evacuation was done out of precaution.
Fire crews and members of Enbridge Gas Ohio worked to find the leak or the source of the odor, while gas was shut off to Class Avenue.
"We’re working with emergency responders on a suspected natural gas odor in Uniontown on Class Ave," Enbridge Gas Ohio told 3News in a statement. "As a safety precaution, the FD evacuated area residents. A safety perimeter has been established. Public safety is our top priority. Thanks to Uniontown Fire Department."
Families in that area who need assistance with reunification can come to the Uniontown Fire Department or call 330-699-3239 for questions.
