AKRON, Ohio — With Northeast Ohio in the path of totality for the solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024, school districts throughout the region have decided to cancel classes for that day – including Akron Public Schools.
APS announced their closure decision earlier this week while noting the significance of the eclipse.
“For the first time in 200 years, Ohio will be in the path of the total eclipse,” according to a post on the district’s site. “The last time the sky went dark in the state was in 1806. Suffice to say, this is a big deal.”
So what do parents need to know? The April 8 school closure is being added as part of spring break, which means students will be off from Friday, March 29 through Monday, April 8. Classes are then set to resume on Tuesday, April 9.
“To adjust for this change, APS will be in session Thursday, March 28 (which was initially an Instructional Improvement Day),” according to the district’s site. “Instead of having March 28 as an Instructional Improvement Day, that day off will now be Monday, April 8.”
The eclipse will enter the country in Texas before traveling through multiple states. NASA outlines the eclipse timeframe in Cleveland as follows:
- Partial eclipse begins: 1:59 p.m.
- Totality begins: 3:13 p.m.
- Maximum totality: 3:15 p.m.
- Totality ends: 3:17 p.m.
- Partial eclipse ends: 4:29 p.m.
Other states in the path of totality include Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Portions of Canada will also be treated to the total eclipse.
