Report: Acquiring Trent Williams 'still on the table' for Browns

According to ESPN's Josina Anderson, acquiring Trent Williams from the Washington Redskins is still a possibility for the Cleveland Browns, but no deal is imminent.

As the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft approaches, the assumption from many has been that the Cleveland Browns will use the No. 10 overall pick to take a left tackle.

But according to a new report, the Browns may use another avenue to fill their most glaring need.

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, ESPN's Josina Anderson shared that while no deal is imminent, the possibility of Cleveland acquiring Trent Williams from the Washington Redskins is still "on the table." The Browns have been linked to Williams for the better part of the past year, but have yet to trade for the 31-year-old veteran throughout his contract dispute in Washington.

Selected out of Oklahoma with the No. 4 pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, Williams has been selected to seven Pro Bowls over the course of his nine-year career. The 6-foot-5, 320-pound offensive tackle, however, hasn't played since the end of the 2018 season after engaging in a holdout with the Redskins through most of last season before ultimately failing his physical after reporting.

Earlier this month, Washington reportedly gave Williams permission to seek a trade, with the offensive tackle needy Browns frequently linked as one of his top suitors. Asked about the possibility of acquiring a veteran during this weekend's NFL Draft, Cleveland general manager Andrew Berry insisted the team wouldn't pigeonhole itself into any particular course of action.

“In terms of likeliness, we will probably never know until we are closer to the draft, but we will explore any avenue that can improve the roster," Berry said. "It truly is the approach. Anything that we think can help improve the team, we are going to be actively exploring it and will certainly listen but I can’t say anything specific.”
