Olmsted Falls native Katie Moon wins silver medal in women's pole vault final at Paris Olympics

Moon, who previously won gold in women's pole vault during the Tokyo Olympics, was among 19 athletes competing in the Paris final.

PARIS, France — Way to go!

Olmsted Falls native Katie Moon has won a silver medal in the women's pole vault final, which started with 19 athletes and took more than three hours to complete on Wednesday at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics.

The gold medal went to Nina Kennedy of Australia. Bronze was claimed by Alysha Newman of Canada.

How did the competition unfold? Each athlete was given three attempts at topping various heights as listed below. If they failed to clear the bar by their third attempt, they were eliminated from the competition.

Below is a list of the different jump heights with details on how Moon performed in each.

4.40m

  • Moon topped the bar on her first attempt.
  • All 19 athletes advanced to the next height.

4.60m

  • Moon topped the bar on her first attempt. 
  • Six athletes eliminated.
  • 13 athletes advanced to the next height.

4.70m

  • She's done it again! Moon cleared this height on her first attempt.
  • Four more athletes were eliminated.
  • Nine athletes advanced to the next height.

4.80m

  • Amazing! Moon cleared the bar on her first attempt once again and advanced to the next height.
  • Four more athletes were eliminated.
  • Five athletes advanced to the next height.

4.85m

  • Moon missed clearing the bar on her first attempt.
  • Moon cleared the bar on her second attempt, advancing once again.
  • One athlete was eliminated. Four have advanced to the next height.

4.90m

  • Moon missed clearing the bar on her first attempt. She will have another try at this height momentarily.
  • Moon is guaranteed a medal after one of the final four competitors -- Angelica Moser of Switzerland -- was eliminated.
  • Moon opted to pass on her second attempt at this height.
  • Newman, of Canada, missed her third attempt, giving her a bronze medal.

4.95m

  • Moon missed on her first attempt at this height, but since she passed in the prior round this jump counted as her second attempt. Just one try left.
  • Kennedy, of Australia, missed her first attempt.
  • Moon missed her final attempt, ending the competition in second place with a silver medal.
  • Kennedy won the gold medal.

Moon, 33, who attended Ashland University, is in the Summer Games for the second time after previously winning gold in the pole vault competition during the Tokyo Olympics back in 2021.
