CLEVELAND — All lanes on I-90 West at West 98th Street/West Boulevard in Cleveland were closed for several hours Monday afternoon following a crash in which two children were killed.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office released new details Tuesday morning, identifying the victims as follows:
- 16-year-old girl: Iana McCrary of Cleveland
- 9-year-old boy: Daeshon Whalen of Cleveland
Cleveland EMS had previously told 3News the boy was 7 years old.
Two other victims were taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition.
Cleveland police closed the highway while they investigated the incident. The lanes were reopened shortly after 5 p.m.
The crash involved a garbage truck from the Kimble Company, based in Dover. The company released the following statement to 3News on Tuesday:
“We are deeply saddened to confirm that an incident occurred on 04/01/24 involving a vehicle crash that tragically resulted in a loss of life. Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the individuals involved during this incredibly difficult time.
"Safety is an important priority, and we are fully cooperating with the authorities as they conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of this accident.
"Out of respect for the privacy of those involved, we are unable to provide further details at this time.”
