INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — Drivers on Interstates 480 and 77 were at a standstill most of Saturday afternoon due to a crash, and an Ohio state trooper was later injured while trying to assist.
The ramp from I-77 north to I-480 west was originally closed due to a "commercial vehicle crash" just before 1 p.m., and the trooper was in his cruiser assisting Independence police with traffic control. As he was doing this, the cruiser was hit from behind by a Jeep driver by a 30-year-old Put-in-Bay resident.
The trooper was taken by ambulance to Marymount Hospital in Garfield Heights, but his injuries are not considered to be life threatening. The driver of the Jeep was also hurt, but did not have to be transported from the scene.
The collision led to the closure of 480 west at the 77 interchange. Both highways were jammed for hours, but have since been reopened.
The incident remains under investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.
