AKRON, Ohio — An Akron man has been sentenced to at least 21 years in jail following the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old in 2021.
On Monday, Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Kathryn Michael sentenced 23-year-old Deangelo Preston to life in prison, with the first possibility of parole being after 21 years. In June, a Summit County jury found Preston guilty on the following charges related to the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Nykayla Lehman in 2021.
- Murder with a Gun Specification – a Special Felony
- Felonious Assault with a Gun Specification – a Felony of the 2nd Degree
- Reckless Homicide with a Gun Specification – a Felony of the 3rd Degree
The incident occurred on July 18, 2021, when Preston, Lehman and three others were at a home on Thornton Street in Akron. At one point during the party Nykayla left the home before returning a short time later. After she knocked on back door, Preston is alleged to have picked up a gun and shot through the door twice, killing her.
Following the shooting, Preston shot himself in the face and suffered significant injuries.
