University of Akron building temporarily evacuated, student taken to hospital after chemical spill

A University of Akron student was taken to the hospital out of precaution following an accidental chemical spill on Monday.

AKRON, Ohio — A University of Akron student was taken to the hospital and a building was temporarily evacuated following a chemical spill on Monday.

A university spokesperson told 3News that the incident occurred when a student working in the lab inside the Knight Chemical Lab building dropped a bottle containing the chemical 1,3-Diaminopropan. Some of the chemical splashed on the student's pants as the bottle broke.

Per the spokesperson, the student was immediately placed in the shower and the Akron Fire Department was called. The student was transported to Akron General, out of precaution.

Additionally, the building and an adjacent building were closed until the situation was investigated, with both buildings having since reopened. The lab is currently closed and will remain closed until the cleanup of the chemical is completed.
