SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Springfield Township Police have arrested a suspect accused of assaulting a 39-year-old female with a box cutter.
Officers responded to the Quality Inn on Arlington Road on Tuesday afternoon for a report of an assault, with the suspect having fled on foot. Upon arriving, officers located a 39-year-old female victim with serious injuries to her upper body.
After the victim was transported to Akron City Hospital, officers learned that a citizen had seen the suspect attempting to hide in a shed. Officers responded to the location, resulting in a short foot chase, with the suspect at one point picking up a brick and threatening officers, telling them to kill him.
Officers eventually took the suspect into custody without incident. An investigation determined that the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Sterling Lorenzo Childs, had assaulted the victim several times in the head, face and body with a box cutter and his fists.
Childs was booked into the Summit County Jail on charges of felonious assault with a weapon specification. As of Friday, the victim remains hospitalized in critical condition with internal injuries.
